Yesterday JW and I attended the race for Doggett's Coat and Badge (see www.history.ac.uk/gh/doggett.htm). It was a perfect day on the river, without a cloud in the sky, and a light breeze to keep us from roasting. The winner was apparently an Olympic sculler and the others didn't give him much of a challenge; but as our launch went straight to the finish to await the arrival of the contestants, we didn't see anything of the course of the race. Afterwards we returned to Fishmongers' Hall, which I think impressed JW, who is generally rather blasé.
